British Weightlifting Event Birmingham – The Rigs Fitness Open

The Rigs Fitness Open – British Weightlifting Competition – Saturday 20th May 2017

Weightlifting Competition Birmingham

An official Tier 3 British Weightlifting event held at Birmingham’s Multi Award Winning Gym, Rigs Fitness. Featuring both male and female weightlifters from all weight categories, lifting will start at 10am on Saturday 20th May. This will count as a qualifying event for Tiers 1+2 and standard BWL TCRR will apply throughout.

LIFTERS:

You will have to apply to lift using the BARS (non BARS entries will not be recognised), there are no prerequisites to lift in this competition other than you have to be an official BWL member. Minimum lifting age is 15 (if you have been 14 at any point in 2017 you will not be eligible to lift).

SPECTATORS:

All lifters are encouraged to bring friends, family and fans along to this event. All spectators will be charged £7.50 entry and this will grant you access to the competition all day (from 10am – 6pm). There will be hot and cold refreshments available to buy on the day as well.

Spectator tickets can be purchased using card or cash from reception at Rigs Fitness and are on sale now – these will be available to buy on the day. “You wouldn’t use the same recipe to bake every cake”.

At Rigs Fitness, we understand that no athlete is the same so no programme should be either. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ programme, which is why all our ADP’s are designed based on the needs of any given athlete:

  • Sport or Competition
  • Aims, Goals and Aspirations
  • Biomechanical Restrictions
  • Current Training Age and Physical Ability (via initial subjective and objective assessment measures)
  • Time Commitments & Budget 
  • Club Specific Targets and Individual Requirements

Measurable

On the Rigs ADP, constant monitoring and assessment ensures progressions and improvement. Be this via objective measures (performance assessments or movement screening) or subjective measures (such as the athletes feelings or coach’s judgement). With pre and post phase assessments, ongoing athlete monitoring and regular feedback, it’s easy to identify your progression and see your performance continue improve.

Olympic Weightlifting in Solihull, Birmingham at Rigs Fitness

Put simply Olympic Weightlifting is the act of raising a barbell from floor to overhead. The sport is contested within two disciplines: the Snatch, which is done at slightly lighter loads, but in one single explosive movement and the Clean & Jerk, done under heavier loads, is completed in two separate movements.  Both classical lifts demand a high skill level, combining coordination, strength and power, as well as flexibility. Whilst this all may sound daunting the benefits of Olympic Weightlifting are insurmountable. For example, Lets break down both classical lifts into their component parts.

INTRODUCING THE RIGS OFF-PEAK GYM MEMBERSHIP

Are you currently a Student?… Do you work Shifts?… Are you retired?… If the normal ‘peak’ gyms times don’t apply for you and you want to use the gym when Rigs Fitness is quieter, then the off-peak gym membership (functional) is for you. With the ‘Functional’ off-peak gym membership you will be able to use Rigs during the following hours:

Mon – Fri: 10am – 4pm

Sat & Sun: 10am – 4pm

You will have full use of our Award Winning Facilities during these quieter hours whilst no classes are running at the gym. At weekends the gym is available to you from 10am – 4pm, and if you want to try one of our classes then you can just purchase a ‘3-Class Pass’ from reception.

We have listened to your needs, and Early Morning Openings at Rigs Fitness are finally here. We know that so many of you have been waiting to train with us before work and now you can. Starting March 2014 our opening hours will be as follows:

Monday: 7am – 9pm (Early Morning Functional Fitness Class)
Tuesday: 7am – 9pm
Wednesday: 7am-9pm (Early Morning Functional Fitness Class)
Thursday: 7am – 9pm
Friday: 7am – 9pm
Saturday: 10am – 4pm
Sunday: 10am – 4pm

EARLY MORNING FUNCTIONAL FITNESS CLASSES

Starting 3rd March 2014, Monday and Wednesday mornings we will be running our Award Winning Functional Fitness classes from 7am-7.45am. A short but high intensity functional training class that will satisfy all your morning training needs. Finishing at 7.45am will give you ample time to use our shower and changing facilities after the class, get ready at the gym, and get to work on time. Remember we are only 4 miles from the centre of Birmingham and 4 miles from the centre of Solihull. 

Exclusive to Rigs Fitness our Functional Fitness classes focus on improving Strength, Flexibility, Endurance and Muscle Tone (Body Fat Loss). Using functional movements (how we move in real life), in this high intensity, constantly varied class allows you to train every muscle in your body, and like all of our Elite Classes, it is scaled to your level of ability.

We would like to think that in Rigs Fitness, the judges saw a gym and a fitness team that are truly trying to stand out as unique. With phrases like, an unwavering dedication to functional fitness and ‘real’ training without compromise; these aren’t just random words used to get new members, it’s truly what everyone believes and are trying to achieve at Rigs. And to have gained such recognition for this in such a short amount of time is real reward for all the hard work and dedication that has been put into making Rigs Fitness what it is today!

As well as this, the dedication that has gone into making the Rigs Fitness brand what it is has not gone unnoticed. Realising that the very best coaching means nothing if you’re not able to market your gym in the right way, a goal from the start was to make sure that everything that comes from Rigs Fitness is as professional and as on brand as possible. Everything has been produced in house at Rigs Fitness with no previous experience! This includes designing and writing our own WEBSITE, managing SOCIAL MEDIA, designing all graphics and imagery and all digital imagery, including VIDOES!

Not a single thing from photography & editing to final release has been outsourced. Although this meant an even bigger work load it has paid off massively, earning Rigs a website, social media force, and brand that is fast becoming unrivalled in the independent gym world.

Put simply, Olympic Weightlifting is the act of raising a barbell from floor to overhead. Whilst this all may sound daunting the benefits of Olympic Weightlifting are insurmountable. For example, Lets break down both classical lifts into their component parts.

The pull or deadlift phase – many of you will have regularly deadlifted in the past or at least have heard of this popular exercise. It’s a great developer of the posterior chain – namely your hamstrings, glutes and muscles of the back. Olympic Weightlifting forces you to adopt superior positions in this movement as not doing so will result in a failed lift. Forget rounded backs and slumped shoulders, from the beginning of your journey into this wonderful sport, optimal and safe movement will go hand in hand.

The second pull/explosive phase – this is the heart of Olympic Weightlifting and is responsible for why all sports at the highest level regard the Olympic movements and their variations so highly. Real world athletic function doesn’t just require a big squat, the rate at which you can recruit muscles and apply maximal force is of much higher importance and is the reason why some pretty average looking men have hoisted three times their own bodyweight overhead, yes three times!
But what does that mean for you? A bigger vertical jump, faster reactions, explosiveness, power…..read – all the good stuff!

Squat/recovery – the overhead squat and front squat are both innate parts of the Olympic lifts, and done just as individual exercises will develop superior strength in their own right. Done within the Olympic lifts however, you can also add the demand for timing and coordination, as well as an iron will. This leads me to one aspect of Olympic Weightlifting which is easy to overlook. Simply put, it is the great mental toughness required to pull yourself under a loaded bar. Striving to add more weight to the bar whilst maintaining textbook technique will keep you coming back for more and in short, Olympic Weightlifting will provide you with the challenge of a lifetime.
