Crossfit training is an exceptional way to develop fitness and athleticism, two things we put a lot of focus into advancing at Rigs Fitness. The training requires those taking part to move their bodies the way they were designed to be moved, as opposed to isolating movements that are not likely to be recreated outside of the gym environment. Crossfit exercises often require the use of movement in all 6 degrees of freedom, meaning that almost every muscle in the body is used in any given Crossfit exercise, again something many other training methods could learn from. The recruitment of multiple muscle groups (particularly at the high intensities used in Crossfit training) in one movement leads to some commonly sought after fitness goals, including increased muscular tone and increased fat loss.

Crossfit training is becoming increasingly more popular, and it’s playing a major role combating the lifestyle disease epidemics that are becoming more and more prevalent: Obesity, T2D, Metabolic Syndrome, CHD, Hypertension… to name but a few. And anything that gets people off their sofas today is sorely needed, and Crossfit training must be commended for that.

Crossfit workouts or WODs (Workout of the Day), are often randomised programs that involve full body exercises segmented into full or part pyramid sets. Exercises are often completed for max reps, or in the quickest time possible, meaning the training is always at a high intensity. A phrase often used to describe the training is metabolic conditioning. A mix of body weight and added resistance exercises are utilised and particular focused is placed on Olympic and Powerlifting lifting, most notably the Clean, Snatch, Deadlift and Squat. (Similarities with our Functional Fitness Classes).

Of course Crossfit did not invent any of these exercises, rather it ‘re-brands’ them into WODs, which results in a high intense full body workout consisting of both high skill and low skill exercises. One criticism of Crossfit training is that the use of such technical lifts such as the Snatch, or the Power clean can become dangerous when put into metabolic conditioning style circuits. With fatigue comes a drop in form, and a drop in form when completing technical lifts can lead to injury. However if correctly taught and periodised these lifts are made safe.

Owner of Exertrain, Dean Kent training Olympic Lifts at the Rigs Fitness open day.

Crossfit training at Rigs Fitness…

One of the reasons Crossfit training is popular at Rigs Fitness is that members are not restricted by class times throughout the day. Members are free to use the facilities whenever they like, meaning they can come in and train a WOD whenever they like, either on their own or in a group. The Rigs Coaches are always on hand to offer technical advise and suggest workouts when needed.

We’re not Crossfit affiliated as we’re also a professional strength and conditioning gym, used by some of the countries top teams and athletes. On top of this we’re also the home of the ISKA Team England Kickboxers, and have a competing boxing squad who train and fight regularly. Our top coaches hold degrees in Sports Science, Physiology, Physics, and Neuroscience along with a number of national, and international titles in various sports.

We’re not Crossfit affiliated however there are few places better equipped, both with facilities and coaching, to train Crossfit anywhere in the Midlands, and even the country… than Rigs Fitness.

If you have any views on Crossfit training, or have used Rigs to complete any WODs then we’d love to hear from you… Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.

Rigs Fitness in Moseley are taking a team of 11 down to Tough Mudder UK on Sat 4th May. Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, determination, and camaraderie. Registering for Tough Mudder has really given the team and incentive to train, and to train hard and we plan on doing two Tough Mudder events each year as Team Rigs.

As mentioned above, Tough Mudder events test all aspects of both physical and mental fitness of the competitors. Unlike other popular endurance events, Tough Mudder requires the use all the energy systems by requiring competitors to run for extended periods as well as to complete high intensity obstacles, such as monkey bars, commando crawls, tyre runs, and wall climbs. The best competitors do not specialise or excel in any one area of fitness, rather they are competent in numerous areas.

For these reasons, we at Rigs Fitness have designed a training program (shown below with workout plans) that replicates the exact fitness needed to compete and complete a Tough Mudder event. Many of the exercises need specialist equipment and instruction which is why it is always better to find a gym that specialises in Functional Fitness to complete the circuits. Luckily, Rigs Fitness has all the specialist equipment needed to do such training, and focus on the kind of fitness training needed to excel in Tough Mudder style fitness challenges.

1 Minute: Sumo Squats

2 Minutes: Skipping (Double Unders)

1 Minute: Plank (Superman Plank)

1 Minute Rest

The circuits are to be completed at the highest intensity possible. Given the small rest to work ratio it can be hard to keep a high level of work rate going for this period of time, however these workouts simulate lactate threshold training very well, something that is important for Tough Mudder events as the ability to push yourself even when your tired is a much needed one.

In addition to these session which are done twice per week, Team Rigs also take part in the Rigs Fitness Functional Fitness Level 2 sessions. These are similar in some ways to the above workouts, however they lean slightly more to the metabolic conditioning training you would find in a Crossfit WOD. The addition of some heavy resistance and isometric training is also added into Functional Fitness Level 2 classes, giving a great full body workout at a truly high intensity, again something that lends itself very well to Tough Mudder events.

Finally, the team have been completing at least 2 running sessions per week, trying to simulate the undulations found in a Tough Mudder event as much as possible by running through parks and forests as opposed to on roads. We stop in the middle of runs (which usually total to around 4 miles), to do hill sprints. 3 minutes on a rolling clock, with partners running rolling hill sprints.

The workout plans shown above, along with the specialist training already found at Rigs Fitness are proving very effective in getting the team fit and ready for Tough Mudder in May.

If you’ve read through this and are not sure of any workouts then please just leave a comment below and we’ll be happy to explain best we can.

We’d also love to hear from you if you’ve completed any Tough Mudder events and wish to share your info on training and the day itself.

Updates on how the team get on to follow…

On Wednesday 6th March, The Mayor of Solihull, Kenneth Hawkins, made an official visit to Rigs Fitness, Functional Fitness and Boxing Club, situated between Solihull, Moseley, Kings Heath and Birmingham. The Mayor is very impressed with what Sam has done with Rigs Fitness in such a short amount of time as a new business start up, saying;

It’s great to see a new business doing so well in the area. I really like how the gym is back to basics, with old school functional training, boxing and real fitness sessions!

When becoming the Mayor of Solihull, Kenneth made a pledge to helping people and really making a difference, and he realises that a big part of this involves keeping people healthy an active. He’s fighting to get people back into the gym and believes Rigs Fitness is the place to go!

We presented the Mayor of Solihull with a unique prize for the Mayors Charity Ball… A 1-1 personal training session with current ISKA World Champion Kick-boxer, Paul Gilmore. Paul also teaches a weekly Fighting Fit Class at Rigs, and for more information on Paul’s Class, and all the classes at Rigs Fitness please click here. We also presented the Mayor of Solihull with and honorary membership at Rigs Fitness, as we know he has a background in boxing and would love to use our facilities.

Since opening in August 2012 the gym has gone from strength to strength, now being the regular training facility for some of the areas best sports teams & athletes. We’re also getting some great feedback and testimonials from our members who have access to our unique functional fitness and boxing classes, all taught by some of the country’s top coaches.

The Mayor really expressed his gratitude to Rigs Fitness for offering such a unique prize for the Mayors Charity Ball and said,

I’m truly thankful for Sam and Paul’s generosity. It’s not often we get to offer such a great prize for such a great cause, but just like Rigs, this is something unique that we hope will be the cause for much interest at the ball

We’re grateful to the Mayor of Solihull for coming down to Rigs Fitness on an official visit and look forward to having him here in the future, and seeing who wins the Personal Training prize at the Mayors Ball in April.

The Workouts

Mon: 10x3Min Rounds Interval Skipping w 30s Mountain Climbers Between Rounds

Tues: Functional Fitness Circuit

Weds: 10x3Min Rounds Interval Skipping w 30s Mountain Climbers Between Rounds

Thurs: Functional Fitness Circuit

Fri: 10x3Min Rounds Interval Skipping w 30s Mountain Climbers Between Rounds

Sat: 20x15m Lengths Walking Lunges 35kg (Split into 5 sets of 6 lengths w 2mins rest)

Sun: REST

The 3 minute rounds of skipping consisted of 3x1min intervals of [30s @80bpm and 30s @ 110-120bpm].

Mountain climbers are an exercise for the obliques, bringing the knee to the opposite elbow whilst in a straight arm plank position.

Walking lunges included a 2 second pause at the bottom of each lunge and a safety squat bar was used to add 35kgs to the lunge.

Functional Fitness Circuits varied weekly but consisted of mostly body weight training with some high intensity strength cardio. Exercises included: Bastardos, Burpees, Pull Ups, Press Ups, Dips, Tyre Flipping, Sledge Hammers, Battle Ropes, Prowler Work, Ladder Drills, and Boxing Training (Pad Work, Core Isometric Holds, Back Work, Jump Work).

The Diet

Meal 1 @8am: Porridge Oats, 250ml Fruit Juice, Banana, Coffee

Meal 2 @12-1pm: Lean Meat/Fish, Rice, Broccoli, Anhydrous Caffeine

Meal 3 @3pm: Banana, Protein Bar, Coffee

Meal 4 @5-6pm: Lean Meat/Fish, Rice, Broccoli, Hard Boiled Eggs

Meal 5 @9pm: Lean Meat, Stir Fry Vegetables, Steamed Rice

Fluid Intake: 2 litres of water consumed per day excluding consumption required with exercise. 500ml of water was consumer 1 hour before training and up to 250ml every 15 minutes during training. After training 500ml of water was consumed for every 1lb lost in weight. When exercise intensity felt particularly high, 30-60g of carbohydrate was consumed during. Following exercise 300-700mg of sodium (from a fluid replacement sachet) was consumed for each litre of water consumed.

The diet was not an exact science. Macro nutrient ratios were roughly 35% Protein 30% Fats and 45% Carbohydrate however Sam did not stick rigidly to this. In his own words…

“The obsession with macro-nutrient ratios has gone a little far, it is not a simple as picking your favourite Protein:Fat:Carbohydrate ratio and seeing results, you have to find out what works for you and ADAPT throughout. YOUR BODY has a great way of letting you know what you need, NOT the results you find on Google!”

Sam had cheat days! Daily kcal intakes were worked out prior to each week meaning a weekly calorie total was known. If a daily intake was exceeded by 1000kcal then this would be made up over the next 6 days. Sam is qualified in sports nutrition and has a degree in Sports Science and Physiology, he designed the workout and nutrition programs so if you have any questions for him… Get In Touch!

Why Skipping and not Running, Cycling, Swimming, or Walking?

Simple… Skipping burns 1074kcals per hour, compared to running’s 755kcals per hour, cycling’s 745kcals per hour, swimming’s 528kcals per hour, and walking’s 391kcals per hour. Skipping is a full body exercise, it doesn’t isolate a movement and there are so many variations to keep it interesting. You do not stagnate with your skipping training, you don’t get bored with your skipping training, and this is of massive importance when choosing the best exercise for you to lose body fat.

Skipping is also completed at a relatively high intensity, meaning your body will actually preserve any lean muscle it has (and even promote muscle growth in some cases). The more lean muscle you have on your body, the more calories you will burn and more importantly, the vast majority of these calories will come from stored body fat meaning you’ll lose body fat fast.

Alongside functional fitness training and boxing, skipping provides the perfect environment for your body to become a fat burning furnace. Get rid of you hour long runs, walks, and rides and start Skipping, Hammering and, Punching if you want to get in serious shape quickly and lose body fat fast.

I wrote an article about the ‘Obesity Epidemic’ at the start of 2012, the finishing sentence of which was The truth is, unless we change, nothing will change, and as expected it seems nothing has changed!

According to the latest health survey … In England 24% of men and 26% of women in England are obese, while 65% of men and 58% of women are either overweight or obese. This compared with the results from the first health survey back in 1993 where only 13% of men and 16% of women were classed as obese. Something is going drastically wrong.

We know what causes obesity and why people become obese, (and if you don’t then please follow THIS LINK to our previous article on obesity) so why have the same old excuses citing poor education and lack of proper labels on foodstuffs been made again! Apparently the coalition has helped encourage a much wider use of labels on foodstuffs so consumers could choose healthier options, and Ministers will be launching a new campaign early next year to encourage people to eat more healthily. People have got a very good grasp on what a healthy and unhealthy diet consists of, and contrary to popular belief people are intelligent enough to realise that eating cakes, biscuits, and burgers all day is not going to keep them in tip-top shape.

So I’ll say it again… until healthy foods are made cheaper and more accessible to the general public nothing will change. Here’s a working example, If a Big Mac Meal was more expensive than a salmon fillet, sweet potatoes, and fresh asparagus then people might choose the healthy option. Or if you prefer, perhaps all the fast food restaurants on busy main roads could be replaced with greengrocers or noodle bars? Or how about this… and this is my favourite… how about the government pours some money into the prevention of these problems and subsidises gym memberships for every tax paying citizen in the country. Maybe a large cost now, but it will surely in the future it will save on the estimated $100 Billion that is spent each year on obesity.

If you have any views on this issue then please let us know, it seems we are in real need of some intelligent suggestions on how to solve this large problem.

If you want to know the devastating effects of obesity and its related diseases then please follow THIS LINK to our PREVIOUS ARTICLE.

Obesity is a disorder in which a person has abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair their health. A persons’ Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-to-height that is most commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. BMI is defined as a person’s weight in kilos divided by the square of his/her height in meters (kg/m2).

- a BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight

- a BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity

BMI provides the most appropriate means of defining obesity and overweight in the general population, as it is the same for both sexes and all ages of adults. It’s not without its inaccuracies, however, as it gives you a definition of your body mass-height ratio without actually measuring what your body mass consists of. For instance, it’s notuncommon to find a bodybuilder at 1.77m (5ft 10in) and 101 kg (16 stone). This person would have a BMI of 32.2 and would be classed as obese. However on looking at the bodybuilder, who may well be 6% body fat, it’s obvious there is no obesity. There are other measurements that can give an indication as to whether somebody is overweight or obese, including (but not limited to): Waist-Hip ratio, Waist-Height ratio and Lean-Fat Mass readings. BMI does however remain the best tool for classifying obesity in the general population.

Causes of Obesity

There is no getting away from the underlying cause of obesity; there is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Simply put, to become obese you need to eat more than you burn off. This comes down to the lifestyle choices and lack of physical activity of the individual who is obese.

There are some genetic causation’s of obesity that can increase ones appetite or determine how much fat your body stores. And indeed there are some medical disorders including; Cushings Syndrome (hormonal), Under Active Thyroid Gland (hypothyroidism; Again hormonal), and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). However these pale into insignificance when it comes to the cause of the vast majority of global obesity.

Globally there has been an increase in the intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat, salt and sugars and contain very low nutritional value. This accompanied by a global decrease in physical activity, due in part to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation and increase urbanization, forms the platform from which our global obesity epidemic flourishes.

Health Consequences

We are all told that Obesity is a global epidemic that is sure to be the largest socio-economic burden on the planet in the near future, and we all seem to accept this. However do we really know why being Obese is so horrific? What is it about carrying an excess amount body fat that is crippling our (and many others) nation?

A look at Obesity in more detail:

Obesity is concerning subcutaneous (under the skin) body fat that is split into different compartments of your body, some more serious than others.

- Lower Body Fat (all areas of subcutaneous fat below your hip bone, gluteal and leg) including marbling of fat between the muscle groups, and

- Upper Body Fat (all areas of subcutaneous fat in the superficial and deep trunk and breast.

These stores of body fat act as a reservoir for fat storage and release. Fat in your body is stored in cells known as adipocytes. In obesity, adipocytes become resistant to you body’s attempt to discard of excess fat, which in turn leads to an even higher concentration of fat in these stores and, as a consequence, flowing into the bloodstream to be circulated around the body. Simply put the more fat you have, the more efficient your body becomes at storing fat. The consequences of an increase in fat storage include:

- Type 2 Diabetes

- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

- Cardiovascular Disease (Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke, Heart Attack)

- Cancer (Pancreatic, Throat, Kidney, Rectum, Colon)

- Gastro-Intestinal Disease

- Kidney Disease

- Disrupted Menstrual Cycle

- Infertility

- Obstetrical Risks (Still Birth, Caesarean Section)

- Musculoskeletal Disorders (Osteoarthritis)

[If you’d like to know more about the link between obesity and these disease then please get in touch]

Disease risk from the above is directly linked to an increase in BMI. These conditions are not only limited to the adult population, far from it. Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood. But in addition to increased future risks, obese children experience breathing difficulties, increased risk of fractures, hypertension, early markers of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and psychological effects.

The Facts

If not yet, then this is when you will realise that Obesity is serious, serious problem.

- Obesity is the fifth leading risk for global deaths.

- At least 2.8 million adults dies each year as a result (30,000 in the UK alone).

- 44% of the diabetes burden, 23% of heart disease and between 7-41% of certain cancers is attributed to overweight and obesity.

- 1.5 billion adults are overweight, of these, nearly 200 million men and 300 million women are obese.

- Overall, more than one in ten of the world’s adult populations are obese.

- In 2010, 43 million children under 5 were overweight.

- An estimated $100 billion is spent on obesity each year worldwide.

- The likelihood is that somebody you know will die of a disease related to obesity and overweight.

….

What we do now… What we need to do?

It doesn’t take a genius to realise that obesity is a problem that isn’t going away. If you don’t believe this, then just take a look at the national statistics for ‘obesity, overweight, physical activity and diet’ over the last 10 years. There is a steady increase in the amount of people with the disease and the amount of people set to have it in years to come. What’s worrying is that there’s also a steady increase in the amount being done to prevent and treat the problem, (and I believe this to be true).

Many people will have their own opinion as to why this is the case, most blaming either the greed of the obese person or their poor education surrounding health, physical activity and diet. My opinion: there is no single cause for blame. Yes in some cases people will be unaware of the potential health risks associated with a poor nutritional status, but there are also those who are fully aware and simply can’t afford the cost of healthy food (a cost that’s growing at a seemingly exponential rate).

With the cost to manufacture processed foods remaining lower than the cost to farm and supply foods from fresh local sources, the price of a healthy diet is always going to remain a problem. One can only hope that the government intervenes sooner rather than later (which may well be the case if the socio-economic cost of obesity continues to rise). The need to educate people as to the risks of a poor nutritional status is essential. Everybody knows of obesity, but very few actually understand the perils one faces if they slip into the morbidly obese ‘bracket’. However, education is most certainly becoming more accessible to, well, everyone. The Internet, social media and government are all on a push to spread the healthy word.

So what is it that’s holding the fight against obesity and overweight back? For me the problem stems from our lifestyle. All you have to do is compare the lifestyles of people 50 years ago with today and then compare the rates of obesity. Our day to day lives are steadily are becoming longer, more and more sedentary, and increasingly stressful.

How many people actually work a job that involves much more movement than a pen to paper, or typing on a keyboard (oh and the occasional stroll to Gregs for breakfast lunch and second lunch)?

How many people walk/ride to work any more?

How many people truly hit their daily-recommended exercise quota?

How many kids go outside to play with their friends?

The truth is, our lifestyles now involve finding different ways we can sit down for extended periods of time. Whether it’s for 8 hours in front of your computer screen at work, 4 hours in front your TV at when you get home, or an hour in the queue for the McDonalds drive through because you can’t be bothered to get up and walk 30 yards to the counter.

Nothing is going to happen overnight and there is only so much that education and bringing the cost of healthy food will do. The truth is, unless we change, nothing will change.
